The start of the year was overshadowed by the death of  Jerry, secretary of  The Heritage Group from 1987- 2001, his wisdom, knowledge, dry humour and practical help steered us through many iniatives, projects and activities.   

The Dr Mary Young Lecture was held.  with CACE  in Glencarse  Hall  in Feb. when  Professor Charles McKean  gave an entertaining ,informative  lecture on “Earl Patrick’s  Vision  for Glamis”,  in which he  paid  tribute  to Mary, acknowledging   the valuable  archive  research work she had done  on  The Glamis  Papers. 

In March we acquired  a medal awarded to The  Abernyte  Highland Games  in  1869. 

 

In April we had our  Parish Walk, when went to Dunsinane via Whitehills and Tullach Ard, returning via Hoole Farm and Pitmiddle.  Weatherwise  I think this  was possibly  the  best day of the year – very hot and sunny  and one of the best walks. 

The Millenium Walk and the Church was the venue for a “Wild about Wildlife   Event” , a huge success attracting about 45 visitors. 

The piece of  the playground between the back of  the school and  the Shelter Sheds seems a bizarre venue  for a barbecue, but as ever it was  one of the social events of the village calendar … and the rain conveniently  kept  away until the end of the raffle.

 

For the Last 2 years  a small group of members have undertaken an Oral History 1950-2000 A  Project   which involved   a considerable  amount of effort and  time. An offshoot  of the oral work was  a Spotlight on  “Abernyte  2011”      All this material  will be  lodged  in  The Archive section of AKBell Library in Jan. 2012.

Cataloguing of resources is ongoing,    Keep saving snippets and newspaper cuttings  for “ The Village Diary”  an ongoing  record which has been kept since 1988.

 

There are a variety of papers and resources of some of our records. Please  take the time to  look at them, if you wish to borrow them would like to develop any of this material just let any of the committee know.
