TOPIC: Spring and woodpeckers

Spring and woodpeckers 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I have never seen woodpeckers as a mark of an approaching spring but this afternoon, Tuesday 16th February, there was a woodpecker calling and drumming away on Abernyte Hill. Enjoying the sunshine no doubt but a very spring like activity!

Yes I think spring must be coming. There is an Oystercatcher flying around this morning.

Good news John. Oystercatchers were flying around again last night and woodpeckers drumming on the hill yesterday (Saturday 6th March). I have noticed that the birds have been really singing away a lot more in the morning since the weather warmed up a bit in the last couple of days. At least we have had 3 consecutive mornings without frost. The snowdrops and aconites which have been up and kind of half flowering for a month or more are now really beginning to come out. Also crocus flowering in the garden. The weeds are starting to grow too! Any bumblebees seen? I have yet to see one at all.

Yes I think spring is here.

Irene heard a yellowhammer this afternoon (Sunday 7th March) while we were in the garden.

More evidence that spring is here, Trish has reported the first sighting for the year of a bumblebee, she spotted it in her garden on Monday (March 15th). It did not hang around long enough to identify it, but maybe the next one will be less shy.

...and Skylarks this morning. I was fair deafened first thing this morning along by Whitehills!

Can't recall noticing them before this, but now that the hood is no longer pulled tight around my head perhaps I am just hearing better!
