Hawk Moth PDF Print E-mail

A spectacular visitor to Abernyte was discovered by the moth finding spaniel at Infield on 27th August 2009. She unearthed a quite impressive Convolvulus Hawk Moth resting at the stable. This one really gets your attention with a body length measured at 7 cms and wing span of 12.5 cms.

A late summer visitor to these shores, it feeds at dusk on evening primrose, bindweed and honeysuckle flowers, all of which are nearby. It is the largest of any British found insect and travels from the Mediterranean. The muscles in the thorax are capable of sustained flight of over 1,000 miles in just a few days.

It also carries off small children and dogs.......okay, I made that last bit up!

Those of a nervous disposition, look away now!
