Have you seen the woodpeckers? PDF Print E-mail

As a Health Promoting School we are involved in various activities. Recently pupils and staff have started our Cross Country Training programme.

We are using our playing field for training, noting how many times we can go round the perimeter and the time taken always works as an encouragement.

Today, at the start of  training (10.30am) a very large buzzard flew over our heads, it had been perched on a low branch of one of the trees behind our sports equipment shed.  A few moments later we passed along the fence line adjoining Carlo's  house, we saw and heard an unfamiliar bird.

We have been doing a lot of work on identification of garden birds recently,  last week we carried out our annual Schools Birdwatch Survey on behalf of RSPB and we are fairly good at identification. Unfortunately, we were not close enough to identify this bird and with the sound of 20+ enthusiastic joggers approaching it took flight.

Having heard that a pair of woodpeckers have been sighted in the area perhaps you could let us know it they have been seen lately around the playing field or tell us about any other unusual species that have been spotted.

Thank you

Webmaster replies: Yes, you have indeed seen woodpeckers. They are frequent visitors in and around Abernyte. They especially like peanut bird feeders. The Abernyte School eco committee need to check out the Nature Watch pages on the Abernyte Forum for lots more nature news.
