Abernyte Community Company and Abernyte Heritage Group Breathing Places: Nest Box Building Event: 1 March 2009
The weather was kind and the community turned up in droves to the nest box building event held by kind permission of The Vardy's at Kirkton. We thought around 20/30 people would come - it was a fantastic 68 people, all keen to participate, that came at 2pm. It was necessary to split the group into two to allow the boxes to be built safely under the guidance of Ian Montgomery, Countryside Ranger from Perth and Kinross Council. Half the group went over to the Glebe Millennium Walk for a hunt with the other half hammering away building boxes. The groups switched over at half time.
After Anne Davies did a short introduction, Ian brought out the boxes - precut and pre drilled wood - so that the little fingers could hammer safely, and gave a talk about how to build the boxes safely before the noise began. Adults wished they had brought ear defenders as the sound echoed round the garage.

Slowly the boxes took form and as the rubber hinges went on to secure the lids the bird boxes all looked fantastic. After the group photoshoot, drinks and biscuits were hastily consumed then the groups switched over.
The literature Ian brought about garden birds and plants for birds together with bat badges was handed out. All boxes were given a fat ball to attract the birds and details of further local events were distributed to each family.
Anne Davies, Sue Vardy and Trish Neville, did a fantastic job in organising this event and Ian was obviously expert in hosting box building events. Members of the Heritage Group and Community Company also provided support.. The children were very well behaved and a really productive afternoon was had by all. Thanks to all for organising, attending and supporting this great event.
Comments received from participants were: Great to get the kids out and about together What about a longer walk and picnic? Could families host a visit to their bird box and garden? Fab day - real community feel to it all - well done maybe the website should have a survey of birds seen in the homemade boxes! Note from Webmaster... just click on this link and you can tell us who is using your nest box.
