The village and parish of Abernyte nestles a wide, south-facing,valley just north of the Carse of Gowrie and  9 miles west of Dundee and 2 miles north of Inchture. The are enjoys fine and extensive views, especially south-eastwards through the gap in the hills to the carse north Fife and the open sea at the mouth of the Firth of Tay. The hill of King's Seat is in this parish, and at 1236 feet is the highest point of the South Sidlaws.

The history of settlement in the Abernyte area, going back as it does to the Iron Age, cannot be covered in a short paragraph. Happily others have covered it in more detail and one of the most interesting is a book by the late Mrs Kitty Vogelsanger, Balairdie, Abernyte. Kitty's book is an enjoyable read and still avaialble to buy from Abernyte Heritage Group.

I can give you a flavour of this area whose past stretches into prehistory. Early inhabitants of this area knew then what we know now: that it is a superb location in which to live. The traces of the Iron Age fort on Dunsinane Hill and Pictish standing stones nearby at Bandirran are evidence of early people.
