I thought I had better set myself a challenge as I had rather let myself go whilst in my thirties - from a slim, trim and fairly fit racing cyclist to a 'buddhaesq' couch potatoes in only 10 years! - and I was determined to regain my fitness through my 40's, to set myself for the eventual retirement that is looming ever closer.

So, to the purpose of the email.  I had managed to find a wee company that specialises in these kind of 'holiday trips' so I duly paid my fees and eagerly waited for the details.  Whilst contemplating the merits of sudacreme over lanolin lotion to ease inflamed parts I came upon the not so original idea of raising cash for charity - a sort of carrot that I could dangle in front of my handlebars every day as I ground out the miles.  So yes, this is a begging email, begging and pestering you to part with some of your hard earned pennies to support what I believe are two excellent charities, and to ensure that as I ride up Cheddar Gorge or along Long Ness, I think about the good I am doing myself, and the support that we can provide to the charities.
The charities are MacMillan and CHAS.  MacMillan I first came into contact with around 10 years ago when they provided invaluable support to my father - who was dying with cancer, and to my mother who so diligently looked after him whilst managing to juggle things around a full time job.  The support, care, kindness and words of wisdom that the then MacMillan Nurses provided made a world of difference to the quality of my fathers life whilst he was battling this all too common disease.
CHAS is a charity that provides Hospice care and relief for families with seriously ill children, the local hospice being Rachel's House near Kinross.  Having one of your children seriously ill, or with demanding long term care needs, is demanding on the parents, and the rest of the family, so the provision of proper respite care makes a real difference.
